A destroyed jungle.
During these last weeks, I went to horizontal format collage or panoramas. What is different in this kind of image is that this vast field in principle prevents focusing on one element seen in close-up as a face eg. I feel a very strong relationship with the movie and 16: 9 screens and am trying to create very large and dramatic perspectives. In short, it opens my horizons. I prefer to use double-page magazine prints and it turns out that I could buy a whole collection of GEO magazines that I use as a primary source.
The collage that I will now comment is from a photo of an Indian family in the Amazonian jungle. The image of the white woman drowning in a pool came quickly as an addition. I thought then to make a contrast between this drowning and the quiet life of these Indians, imagining the woman as a symbol of a civilization that destroys wildlife and of exploitation of these vast primitive areas. I thought of my readings on the colonization of America (Charles C. Mann 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus and 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created ) And how the Indians lived in those days. And then the image called a deepening of the composition. I felt that the Indians were anecdotal and did not represent an interesting counterpoint to the white figure. I worked the landscape, thinking of Rousseau, whose exotic paintings I love so much since my childhood and Eric Winarto who drops trees and twirls them in the air in many of his paintings. I like the result of this collage: it is between panoramic wallpapers and illustrations of the nineteenth century, so a little naive and very nostalgic.
