A friend gave me a catalog of Icelandic artist Erró I started to tear up. I know this artist for a long time, I never liked his accumulations, but I think I better understand their principle today. It is a game between the surface and objects, such as in weaving. Forms appear on the surface and plunge in the background. The theme of fish seems best suited to this kind of game that resembles Escher’s mutations.
What interested me in this picture is the appearance of a huge garbage dump, theme related to what we see of our planet dump on tv. And this image of tenderness in the absolute poverty of its two faces disfigured by acid. I wanted to show the fragility of these two beings by putting the group on shaky legs. Meanwhile, I remembered a very old collage and painting of mine which was called The Ship of Fools, and I made sure to evoke a shipwreck on a backdrop of war and desolation. So much for the story. At the formal level, it’s the tangle of shapes that attracted me. And I had the feeling of having there an important collage for me, both for the subject and form. I usually try to clarify the forms despite deformation. Here, it becomes a puzzle whose pieces are poorly defined as they are fragmentary. I wanted to get away from the subject of the painting while maintaining the underlying principle of composition. I do not know if I really want to do a lot of collages like this, but the idea of exploring a little further this technique with other collages, perhaps less ambitious in terms of content, twirling abstraction, is tempting me. Remains the question why this chaos attracts me and satisfies me. Is it the sadistic joy to distribute the pieces of paper on the sheet as I want, without worrying much of the likelihood? Or undo the work of another artist and make it my own? Or is it due to the memories of war and destruction of my childhood? Or the sadness to see so much misery on our screens and in magazines? Or does it come from watching season 3 of The game of Thrones?

And if it was all that together?

Blog on art, centered on collage. It is meant as a sort of logbook of my creative work.
