My first collages, in the 60s, were in black and white. I loved the drama in them and the ease of assembling the pieces, especially since so I avoided having to match colors, to monitor their gray value, to consider the "color" effect. Because color was at that time a real problem for me. I did not know how to harmonize the painting. That’s why I removed the color from my paintings and collages. Then, and gradually, I introduced a color, then two and so on., composing my paintings in the style of a Bach fugue. And I haven’t been more bothered by this problem since. That is to say that my current black collages are the result of expressive, expressionistic bias, like the old movies in black and white of Murnau or Lang eg. When I do my collages, I think after a few colored ones: It's time to make a black and white one. I have already mentioned the internal roots of these collages, but it remains to name my discoveries, primarily in adolescence, with woodcuts of Nolde or Masereel and Lynd Ward, and lithos by Munch who have nurtured my imagination throughout my life. I've always been attracted by the “maniera nera”, like Caravaggio. And my mother’s maiden name is “Schwarzmann”…
Last night, after a "white" collage, I thought it was time for a very dark one now. And it came quite easily. Here are the steps:

Here's the link to the bigger picture.
