» (Wikipedia)

This collage with an untranslatable title* features two characters. One is old, he stands in front of piles of banknotes, but he seems overwhelmed. If you look closer, you can see that he is already underground. The other character was originally a Russian partisan holding a rifle with a bayonet. During my work on this collage, I felt dissatisfied because the connection between revolution and money was not clear enough for me. It was while searching that I found this broom which also looks like a big painter's brush and which reminded me of Goya's painting. The broom, in the first sense, is to clean up the world of finance (see the Paradise papers), but in a more metaphorical sense, it is the scythe of death that sweeps everyone, including the rich who believe they can survive by clinging to goods - more or less well acquired - forgetting that death is our common destiny. There is, of course, a bit of humor in this picture, when one thinks of today's Russsia; the great sweep of the October revolution led, 100 years later, to oligarchs who enriched themselves with the scrapings of what remained from the collapse of communism.
Here is, for the Goya, a quote from Wikipedia:
"In a chiaroscuro, two old women, cadaverous, one sitting, the other whispering in her ear, are in the foreground while at the bottom a winged man, shirtless, is equipped with a broom with which he is about to sweep them away.
The seated woman is dressed in white, very neat; she observes a drawing of her miniature, while the second gives her a mirror on the back of which is written "Que tal? " " How are you ? " and which works as a comic, technique already used by the painter in Los Caprichos. It is likely a noble - the Queen, according to the Palace of the Fine Arts - and her servant, obsessed by their respective appearances till the threshold of death, polishing a makeup on a crumbling body while Chronos, in the background, is about to hit them. »(Wikipedia)

*du balai means literally to brush away
