The two characters searching the ground make me think, now as I write about, of the 2 soldiers playing dice under the cross. Indeed, the mutilated body at the top of the tree recalls the crucifixion. I conclude that the giant occupies the place of the evangelist in tears, which had not appeared to me during the making of the image. I have the impression that the characters are isolated from each other in this desolation and that the search for a nugget of gold in the ground is very ridiculous in the face of the disaster. They only transform the soil into a field of waste, to rip it out for a derisory gain. It is by seeing the gold diggers in Alaska and Australia with their giant excavators ravaging the landscape in search of a few grams of the precious metal that I told myself that decidedly there was no longer a place on earth sheltered from the destructive cupidity of man. But perhaps the little green spot under the giant's hand promises a modest resurrection, a victory of life over the destructive frenzy of some men.

Les 2 personnages fouillant le sol me font penser, maintenant que j’écris, aux 2 soldats jouant aux dés sous la croix. En effet, le corps mutilé en haut de l’arbre rappelle la crucifixion. J’en conclus que le géant occupe la place de l’évangéliste en pleurs, ce qui ne m’était pas apparu pendant la confection de l’image. J’ai l’impression que les personnages sont isolés les uns des autres dans cette désolation et que la recherche d’une pépite d’or dans le sol est bien dérisoire face au désastre. Ils ne font que transformer le sol en champ de déchets, à l’éventrer pour un gain dérisoire. C’est en voyant les chercheurs d’or en Alaska et en Australie avec leurs excavatrices géantes qui ravagent le paysage à la recherche de quelques grammes du précieux métal que je me suis dit que décidément, il n’y avait plus un endroit sur terre à l’abri de la cupidité destructrice de l’homme. Mais peut-être que la petite tache verte sous la main du géant promet une résurrection modeste, une victoire de la vie sur la frénésie destructrice de certains hommes.
