Ce collage est parti d’une photo de Nord-Coréens en liesse à la vue de leur bourreau dont les camps ressemblent à s’y méprendre à ceux des Khmers rouges. Mais le personnage à droite n’a gardé de ce dernier que le haut de la tête, le reste devenant une sorte de nain géant. J’ai pensé à la solitude d’un dictateur, la comparant à la mienne ces jours. Ici aussi, la vie se déroule derrière des fenêtres de notre appartement – si loin et si proche – sauf que personne ne prend notice de moi. Mon regard désabusé embrasse ce monde de folie et d’apocalypse annoncée (?), un peu comme un prophète biblique que je ne suis vraiment pas. Par un changement de regard, nourri d’images du passé, je vois une certaine analogie formelle avec le retable Portinari (la division en trois parties et les bergers) et avec l’enfer de Bosch. En effet, ces gens y sont déjà sans le savoir, car leur idolâtrie les rend aveugles à leur propre condition. Quant à l’idole, elle est statufiée, se transformant en pierre ou en bronze qu’il suffira de déboulonner au prochain changement de régime. En fait, le dictateur est déjà mort, mais il ne s’en doute pas encore.

This collage is based on a photo of North Koreans jubilant at the sight of their executioner whose camps are like those of the Khmer Rouge. But the character on the right kept only the top of the head, the rest becoming a kind of giant dwarf. I thought of the loneliness of a dictator, comparing it to mine these days. Here too, life takes place behind the windows of our apartment - so far and so close - except that no one takes notice of me. My disillusioned look embraces this world of madness and announced apocalypse (?), a bit like a biblical prophet that I really am not. Through a change of look, fed with images of the past, I see a certain formal analogy with the Portinari altarpiece (the three-part division and the shepherds) and with Bosch's hell. Indeed, these people are already there without knowing it, because their idolatry makes them blind to their own condition. As for the idol, it is statufied, turning into stone or bronze that will be easy to tear down at the next change of regime. In fact, the dictator is already dead, but he does not suspect it yet.
