This collage started by chance: one half page lying on the next one (2). Putting the torso on it, I saw that the contrast between the figures was quite strong because of the woman’s stillness and smile and the power of the moving torso, both bodies being merged downwards. But in fact this was a reminder of the dancing model of the initial page (1) whose movement had been sacrificed with the half page stuck on it. But this initial dance was to be stronger than I could imagine, as it continued its subversive and unconscious influence till the final state of this collage. But I realize this only as I am writing this commentary, first in French, than in English. I was tempted to stop my work at (3), with the torso emerging from the side of the woman, which would have been an interesting inversion of the biblical story of Eve’s creation, but I wasn’t so satisfied with the amputated torso. The whole picture wasn’t dynamic enough. So I glued the arm holding the 2 cards (4), but then the head didn’t fit any more; it became a begging gesture, in contradiction with the muscles. The new composite head had the advantage of expressing the triumph of holding the right cards (5). The adjunction of the leg gives the impression of a triumphant dance, but the woman’s face was to clichéd (6). I decided to rework both heads and to add the hand. This provoked a reversal of the situation. The woman is the one now who seems to hold the cards whereas the man appears to be in a crisis. She is strong and calm, with a Mona Lisa smile, while the man is struggling in vain. Maybe my visitors see something different in the picture?

Blog on art, centered on collage. It is meant as a sort of logbook of my creative work.
