the bigger picture

I emailed this collage to a very gifted student of mine and she sent me this commentary I publish here with her permission. Enjoy!

…I want to comment on your latest collage ... I find it both filled with humor and ... questions , as many of them.

I am impressed by the immaculate connection between the image of the legs and "busts". Beyond the cutting and reassembling these two images exude a very similar energy, which I’d describe as glamorous - rock , with underlying aggressiveness . It's a good thing for me to watch this, because it shows me that it is possible to make juxtapositions without "blending" .

The figure on the left appears to me as a child and as a result, its "legs" with black panties have a truly disturbing sexual dimension. This takes me directly to the over-sexualization of girls in our consumer society, including those pre-pubescent models that are used in advertising, making them take poses that are at least inappropriate, given their emotional and sexual maturity. This stresses that these legs, especially on the left, seem to belong to a pre- pubescent teenager.

Maybe is it the artificially open mouth of the same character next to the lion which strikes me as a bit of humor ? Is this intentional? The lion looks more threatening, it looks like he’s eating something, yet this work extricates (in my sense ) something that approximates derision, as a sort of parody of the advertisements that exploit sexuality and rock-rebel in order to sell something . I feel halfway between parody and something more tragic, as the over- sexualization of prepubescent girls. I do not know. This is rather halfway between derision and threat as the look of the female character does not seem reassured. Many questions arise,

the spectator has to make up his opinion. It's strong.
