« Oh, Susanna, oh don’t cry for me. | Diving suit » |
Two days ago, I made a collage that seems to horrify some people. I was struck by a photo showing a swimmer kneeling on the floor kissing a killer whale on the tongue. I was a little surprised by this scene and decided to push the matter further in humanizing the beast. That's when the picture becomes strange, because the "man" has no members, reminiscent of a hybrid creature painted by J.Bosch or even to a disabled person. His thick tongue raises other associations, which are rather animal, thus bestial. This is a disproportionate kiss. The girl in the foreground is tiny before this big monster. The look that it throws us reminds me of Kafka's Metamorphosis, where Gregor Samsa is a prisoner of his giant shell, unable to communicate with his family which rejects him for his monstrous appearance and whose taste for rotten stuff makes humans disgust him. My collage shows therefore, I think, a little-shown aspect in pictures of the relationship between two beings. Because it is of course a mere fantasy. QUES – tion is what is at stake here? QUES-tion is what is depicted here ? Male passivity? The daring female? The male at bay? Will he turn into a prince? No, the days of miracles are over. Remains the beast too happy to have found his beautiful.
