This collage was, once again, the result of a happy accident. Starting from an ad I was not particularly interested in - the association between a withered body and jewelry does not offer many creative opportunities in my opinion. It is only when putting half the face with the black eye on the head that my attention was captured by the mocking face emerging from the darkness. The act of clinging to the chain, an echo of collage 476/12, becomes here more disturbing. I thought of Goya’s old witches , the idea of time that these old women spin. The necklace is the thread, of course. And then the character with machine guns came to be inserted into the composition, as an emanation or a puppet of the old witch who holds the thread. Her mocking eye seems to say: You know it is so, it cannot stop. She sees and the other is blind, he has no eyes. If he saw, he could no longer kill.
Furthermore, taking another point of view, I could also say that it is futile to cling to one’s jewelry when you're that old when danger and death are on the lookout.
As I said in my previous message, occasionally a nugget popped into the flow of my collages, encouraging me not to give up, to ignore the devil’s whispers in my ear: "It is time to stop, you've done enough, you're going around in circles, you repeat yourself, you have nothing more to say, look at Philip Roth l, at least he knows when to retire, he says he is released ... like so many other artists who made works of appeasement towards the end of their life ... " Well shit, soon 72 years old that’s not so old and then I have to catch up my years I had to work from morning to evening to earn a crust. My youth is now!
L’âge des ténèbres
Ce collage a été, une fois encore, le fruit d’un heureux hasard. La publicité ne m’avait pas particulièrement intéressé – l’association entre un corps flétri et des bijoux n’offre pas beaucoup de possibilités d’association à mon avis. Ce n’est qu’en posant la moitié du visage à l’œil noir sur la tête que mon attention a été captée par ce visage narquois émergeant de l’obscurité. Le geste de s’accrocher au collier, un écho au collage 476/12, devient ici plus inquiétant. J’ai pensé aux vieilles sorcières de Goya , à l’idée du temps que filent ces vieilles. Le collier étant le fil, bien sûr. Et puis, le personnage à la mitraillette est venu s’insérer dans la composition, comme une émanation ou une marionnette de la vieille sorcière qui tient les fils. Son œil narquois semble me dire : Tu sais bien que c’est ainsi, cela ne peut pas cesser. Elle voit, l’autre est aveugle, il est dépourvu d’yeux. S’il voyait, il ne pourrait plus tuer.
Par ailleurs, en prenant un autre point de vue, je pourrais aussi dire qu’il est futile de s’accrocher à ses bijoux quand on est si vieux que cela alors que le danger et la mort sont à l’affût.
Comme je l’ai dit dans mon précédent message, de temps en temps, un pépite surgit dans le flot de mes collages, m’encourageant à ne pas baisser les bras, à ignorer le diable qui me souffle à l’oreille : « Il est temps de t’arrêter, tu en as déjà fait assez, tu vas tourner en rond, te répéter, ne plus avoir quelque chose à dire, regarde Philip Roth, lui au moins sait prendre sa retraite, il dit qu’il est libéré… ne fais pas comme tant d’autres artistes qui ont fait des œuvres de complaisance vers la fin de leur vie… » Ben merde, bientôt 72 ans ce n’est pas vieux et puis, je dois rattraper mes années où je dû travailler du matin au soir pour gagner ma croûte. Ma jeunesse, c’est maintenant !
