Usually I'm so busy working on my collage that I do not think to take a picture of an intermediate state. But this time, yes, and we can see some improvements I could make to this image. The starting point was the picture of the Pope with a clown nose. At first view it is very nice but in a second time, the contrast between the papal attire and red nose made me think. Because I think a public figure should not lend itself to any bullshit before the cameras – why not the reverse bucket of ice! So I tried to make a contradictory picture, with elements of the religious rhetoric in paintings of the past and more pop, contemporary elements. One of my young artists I currently coach told me about it that my images are made reflections of a mad world. I think it's a nice formula. Many collages that are published on the internet rehashing old dadaist or surreal formulas, but it seems to me that we must create something new, consistent with our world. This is the motivation that pushed me to the collage in the 60s and I want to remain faithful to it. Seeing a story about Picasso on TV, I said to myself that his artistic approach was far more noble than the clowning of the media stars- be they artists or pope. There is a real questioning with Picasso on the representation that inspires me more than the reality shows of the day.

 

 

 

 

Habituellement je suis tellement pris par le travail sur le collage que je ne pense pas à prendre une photo intermédiaire. Mais cette-fois-ci oui et on peut voir les quelques améliorations que j’ai pu apporter à cette image. Le point de départ a été la photo du pape avec un nez de clown. A priori c’est fort sympathique mais dans un second temps, le contraste entre la tenue papale et ce nez rouge m’a donner à penser.Car j’estime qu’un personnage public ne devrait pas se prêter à n’importe quelle connerie devant les caméras – il ne manque plus que le renversement du seau de glace ! J’ai donc essayé de faire une image contradictoire, comportant des éléments de la rhétorique religieuse des peintures du passé et des éléments plus pop, contemporains. Une de mes artistes que je coache en ce moment m’a dit à ce propos que mes images sont le reflet fou d’un monde fou. Je trouve que c’est une jolie formule. Beaucoup de collage publiés sur internet ressassent les vieilles formules dadaïstes ou surréalistes, mais il me semble qu’il faut créer du nouveau, en phase avec notre monde. C’est la motivation qui m’a poussé vers le collage dans les années 60 et je veux y rester fidèle. En voyant un reportage sur Picasso à la TV, je me suis dit que sa démarche artistique avait bien plus de noblesse que les pitreries des stars des médias – qu'ils soient artistes ou pape. Il y a chez Picasso une vraie interrogation sur la représentation qui m'inspirer davantage que les reality shows du jour.
