Notable exception in my daily work, I made an abstract painting
(for a bigger picture, click here)
that I like very much because it shows the atmosphere of my abstract paintings from the ninties
that were very gestural and dramatic, made with industrial lacquer and leaving much to chance. In doing it, I realized that making such a collage did not challenge me more than when I do a figurative collage. It is working on color and space to create a visual impact. Obviously, this work is more like a painting than a collage. Abstract vocabulary has been established for a century now and no longer shocks, we contemplate such a work, it indulges in a reverie, a meditation. In figurative painting, with the exception of cubism, artists generally avoid too brutal fractures, while I research them. What abstract collage therefore brings me is primarily the confirmation that this vein is still in me and that the composition could be deployed on a very large area, synonymous with a successful composition. But as a creative play it is more limited. It is a research of atmosphere, dynamics, and color contrasts that I might as well do with paint. And it is ultimately the search for harmony and beauty. While in collage, I am primarily looking for visual shock, inconsistencies and surprising association games that make nevertheless some sense. When writing these words I understand why I stopped making such paintings after 5 years. If this abstract collage appeared suddenly, I begin to believe that it's a bit due to the death of my half-sister on May 13, once again opening abyssal doors before me into another dimension that defies description and the artist that I am cannot imagine a space that is both turbulent and calm and in which figures are banned.
