I made several collages using torn paper. Curiously, the effect is the reverse of the gesture. In fact, it softens breaks, makes transitions slippery. Is it the sfumato of collage? In my collage Triangular Relationship, the face on the left side has a pictorial quality remembering the masters of the seventeenth century, even though I a little gummed some asperities in PS. The light illuminates the face in the way of Caravaggio, quite pictorially. 10 years ago, I forbade myself this kind of effect, deeming it too close to my painting. Since I am so far from it now, I can be "painterly" in some parts. Regarding this collage, I found it very sweet, with a downward movement as in mournings. An amusing detail and hardly detectable, is the fact that the second character is a woman. So what does this blonde in a contrapposto? She is manipulated, for sure. But the exact nature of this action remains mysterious, including to myself. The violence of this group is balanced by the serenity of the man who smiles sadly and makes a gesture of touch. Without doubt this is a compassionate witness. Like me, except that am only indirectly, through news images. Do my collages have the value of appeasement? I hope so. Because I do not think that I absolutely need to make collages to live well. It is as if I had to do something about these printed pictures, assemble and recompose them to prepare a more palatable menu. Because the picture is gross, even if the photographer chooses the subject and the context and makes retouching. But collage asserts the supremacy of the artist on the image, even if it escapes in the end; he imposes his will, his style. Mine, it is unlikely associations, the game, with references to other artists - also rather vintage ones – continuing on a very small scale, the inventions of the stunning Baroque painters.

J’ai fait plusieurs collages utilisant les papiers déchirés. Curieusement, l’effet est l’inverse du geste. En fait, ça adoucit les ruptures, fait des transitions glissantes. Le sfumato du collage ? Dans mon collage Triangular relationship, le visage à gauche du collage a une qualité picturale me rappelant les maîtres du XVIIe s, même si j’ai un peu gommé les aspérités dans PS. La lumière éclaire ce visage de manière caravagesque, de manière picturale. Il y a 10 ans, je m’interdisais ce genre d’effet, le jugeant trop proche de ma peinture. Depuis, je me suis tellement éloigné de celle-ci que je peux être « pictural » dans certaines parties. Pour ce qui concerne ce collage, je le trouve d’une grande douceur, avec un mouvement descendant comme dans des lamentations. Un détail amusant et guère décelable, est le fait que le 2e personnage est une femme. Que fait alors cette blonde en contrapposto? Elle est manipulée, c’est certain. Mais la nature exacte de ce geste reste mystérieuse, y compris à moi-même. La violence de ce groupe est balancée par la sérénité de l’homme, qui sourit tristement et qui fait un geste d’effleurement. Sans doute est-ce un témoin compatissant. Comme moi, sauf que le suis indirectement seulement, à travers les images d’actualité. Mes collages ont-ils valeur d’apaisement ? Je l’espère. Car je ne pense pas que j’aie absolument besoin d’en faire pour pouvoir bien vivre. C’est comme si je devais faire quelque chose de ces images imprimées, les assembler et les recomposer pour préparer un menu plus digeste. Car la photo est brute, même si le photographe choisit le sujet et le cadre et fait de la retouche. Mais le collage affirme la suprématie de l’artiste sur l’image, même si elle lui échappe in fine, il lui impose sa volonté, son style. Le mien, c’est les associations improbables, le jeu, avec des références à d’autres artistes – plutôt anciens d’ailleurs – en continuant, à très petite échelle, les inventions époustouflantes des peintres baroques.
