This collage is personal. I connect it to my grandmother and my mother, both exposed to the vengeance of the crowd. My grandmother was lynched in Riga, Latvia, where she had been deported by the Nazis. She was over 70 years, my current age. When I heard how she died, I collapsed. I can’t imagine any compassion in this mob, unlike my collage that is more nuanced than the reality of what happened in Riga. My mother was protected by my father; she did not suffer physical attacks. But it has been the hostile climate of the time. That is the background of this image. What still puzzles me is the look of this figure. It bothers me and asks me. Who am I, what is my inheritance of this dark story? Should I respond? How? Am I among the attackers? This look nails me in the stillness of the moment. It is the fixed point of this picture and yet I feel that the eyes move, they force me to make the point. I understand at least one thing that this collage touches me deeply and stirs the depths of myself.
(The title of the collage, refers, of course, to all victims of violence.)

Blog on art, centered on collage. It is meant as a sort of logbook of my creative work.
