C3-PO

for a bigger picture click here.

The central character of this collage is naturally the little girl whom somebody puts a bandage on. She is riveted on what is done to her. She has a gesture that could be interpreted as open or abandonment, but to look more closely after seeing a thumb up his right arm one can guess : she is held, her arms are extended by someone . All this in a mess worthy of Star Wars where a character half-robot , half human is examined thoroughly , probably for repair .

This picture takes me back to both my childhood and my current status. In terms of childhood, I remember a vaccination against smallpox where the syringe seemed huge, especially as the injection was made in the chest, I presume. My brother, older than me, went first to the pan and it seemed horrible to my eyes. I was very scared  and probably (I do not remember it ) had to be held so the  could push the needle into my chest. As for my current state , well thanks to some repairs , my body (re) works pretty well , but I feel it happening funny things there. It may be objected that this is from my very origin so, but the consciousness of my own body fragility manifested itself quite late and was a big shock. That's the personal side. Furthermore we could discuss other possible interpretations as garbage and its influence on human health etc.  But to be honest, I have thought about absolutely nothing when I did it, maybe about C3 -PO ...

The phantom of my mother

for a bigger picture, click here.

This collage came by chance, there is no premeditation. I started with a grotesque character wearing a pink tutu who exhibited himself half-naked in a city. Cutting the back side of this photo and after returning it, there remained only a leg, an arm and a piece of tutu. In another picture, I had already cut out and glued a dog's head emerging from a cauldron over a fire. It is on this picture that I pasted this emaciated body whose misshapen head floats randomly in the air.
Once the "body" pasted, I immediately thought of my mother, so I arranged the head so that it vaguely resembled to my phantasm.
This phantom reminds me of my mother when she was over 99, at the end of her life. She was completely emaciated in her shirt of the nursing home, she looked like escaping gravity. Other elements made me think of her, as the wooden house of a village in Bessarabia where my maternal grandparents come from; the ruins of the two world wars she lived and the pink tutu of her desire to impeccable and her sometimes a little kitschy taste. Her attitude in this collage referred me to her optimism, courage and vitality, in spite of all. Finally, of course, the collage informs on my own attitude towards her, a mixture of tenderness and mockery. This is not a portrait of my mother old, but that of her ghost that dwells in my memory. And interestingly, this phantom haunts me more than the memory of my father.

Undermined

(dec. 2014)
I began to suspect an internal enemy that conspires to my loss. It is the unexpected and devastating occurrence of pneumonia (as I was in perfect condition) which made me think that. It is as if I had been undermined from within, so that even after the disappearance of the fever, I felt drained of all energy, preventing me from any attempt to move or even to read not to speak of thinking. I realize that this idea of a conspiracy against the body by itself may seem paranoid, but I have become suspicious, watching for signs of a possible undermining of my health , which - thanks to an instance of life, positive - improves gradually. I do not know if I'll be able to forget this episode, because I feel that my body becomes vulnerable. And I realized that my mindset depended on it. Thus, during the first 2 days without fever, the idea of making a collage seemed impossible and only the third day I tried the adventure that left me exhausted. In retrospect, I have the impression that the time "without collage” was much longer. This is probably due to the fact that I was plunged in ancient states where I was stuck for inspiration, imagining a life without making art: the horror! I live up again knowing me sentenced to term - remains to be seen how and when the worst will happen. «You’ll know soon enough," says a parental voice inside me. Yep. In the meantime, I will lean on the positive instance, the one that puts me up, that powers oxygen in my brain that has missed some and chases the last remains of this once deadly disease.
add. (jan 2014)
Now that I am fully recovered, I take the measure of what happened to me. In addition to a very big fatigue, I had tremors of my hands on some occasions, even while cutting paper. The latter greatly alarmed me, because it inaugurated a difficult time for me. But time heals a lot of things, it seems, and my tremors are greatly reduced by now. With renewed energy, I spend every day at collage and I still find my happiness. For how long? Currently it is the number of collages 5000 published on my site that I intend to achieve by the end of 2015. Then I'll see where the machine inventing images stays. For now, I get enough new impetus to want to continue my work.

Grooming of the artist

for a bigger picture click here.

I do not know if I've about it written here, but my drawing teacher at the Ecole des Beaux- Arts in Geneva predicted me a bright future, a bit like this collage inspired by Madame Tussauds waxen artists.
Why didn’t it come true? What believed my teacher about me inducing him to make such a prophecy?
I believe that during these years I had lost my inspiration because he had not appreciated the paintings had shown him - at least I suppose - because I have never forgotten the words he uttered after casting a brief look at them : Go and draw the plaster head over there. I interpreted it as a final condemnation of the dreamed and naïve world that I painted then. And this prevented me to invent. I began to experiment with painting, pursuing my inspiration which hid constantly. And my teacher undoubtedly took these stylistic shifts for a valuable quality. But when I left school, my inspiration was longtime absent which resulted in a deep feeling of failure because my desire to make art was intact since I started self-taught at 15. And this prophecy has only strengthened this sense of failure.
The question I ask myself now is whether this prophecy would have been realized without the negative judgment on my first works. I think not. I needed to mature internally to be able to do what I do now. And even if it happens relatively late in my life, I think I now successfully transform my former wandering in real experiments and especially am able to connect myself to my innermost being . So much for the honors - I do not need any. What drives me is the fulfillment of my dream to create images that appeal to me and speak to me.
P.S. Looking at my collage, I can see myself not quite at ease with the grooming...

The boat, the making of.

As this collage changed a lot, I grabbed my camera and took intermediate pictures. I feel that this collage is linked to some events in my own past life. That's why I'll try to explain some aspects of the different stages.

At first, I took a double page displaying a young man on a boat.

I then changed him into an old man graping for an elderly, naked woman seen from behind.

But even if I could project myself into the scene, I felt the picture as a whole quite boring. I changed the man's legs into something more juvenile, fragile and going in the opposite direction thus showing his indecision.

But I still wasn't satisfied with the outcome. I peeled off the woman and changed the man's face again – better ! And now the solitary boy had to get faced with some unknown dangers, sailing towards them or trying to
escape, clinged to the rope.

for a bigger picture click here.

Now to what happened there.
At first I tried to express something on my own condition and on desire : How is desire in/of an old body ? This has been probably by last night's discussion on prostata diseases. But this is rather a medical question and the desire goes where it wants, independently from me.
The modification of the legs is a theme I use from time to time to show some fragility of the inner foundations, which is quite frequently seen with men, even without any prostata problems.
The loneliness of the young/old boy reminds me of my solitary railroad trips from Hannover to Lausanne/Switzerland when I was a boy and the anxiety of missing the station at arrival, going way too far away into the unknown (my French was not as good as today). Another souvenir is when I fell sick in South India and took Lariam which resulted in a highly depressive state with a modified perception of time that lasted till the day I decided to stop taking this pill.
And lastly, it's maybe like crossing the Acheron, falling back into childlike fear before the final destination.

Man of Sorrows - the making of.

It's quite a time that I haven't had the patience to interrupt my collage session in order to take some shots of different states. So here they are.
The collage itself ist quite a big one; it measures 37x48cm which is one of the biggest I made with double magazine pages.
It started with a relatively uninterressant ad, but I was attracted by the figure to the right with iher awkward stance.

I then "furnished" the picture, remembering Erro's collages with Chinese propaganda pictures.

But the standing woman seemed to recessed to me, I tried another head, in order to get her in the foreground.

Logically, I paste Mao's figure into the picture. Now I have my theme: Something about ideology and tyranny.

What fdollows now couldn't be taken by my camera - it went to quickly and was too intense to interrupt the session. But you can see what happened to the collage.

(for a bigger picture, click here.

I reconstructed in fact the whole picture in order to unite the different pieces and to give it a coherent meaning. The Man of Sorrows is a typical picture of the suffering humanity and I found it hit the general meaning very well - the crimes generated by a strong ideology. As for the garbage in the foreground it is meant to illustrate what remains when the dictator is finally gone. Why didn't I leave Mao's face untouched? Because it looked to banal and I wanted something more telling. A picture of Bruce Lee was of some help at that.

Maybe that this collage seems illustrative, but it is linked to the great compositions of Flemish and Italian painters dealing with the spirit of their time. And I believe that ideology is a real problem for humanity.

A disaster in the jungle.

A destroyed jungle.
During these last weeks, I went to horizontal format collage or panoramas. What is different in this kind of image is that this vast field in principle prevents focusing on one element seen in close-up as a face eg. I feel a very strong relationship with the movie and 16: 9 screens and am trying to create very large and dramatic perspectives. In short, it opens my horizons. I prefer to use double-page magazine prints and it turns out that I could buy a whole collection of GEO magazines that I use as a primary source.
The collage that I will now comment is from a photo of an Indian family in the Amazonian jungle. The image of the white woman drowning in a pool came quickly as an addition. I thought then to make a contrast between this drowning and the quiet life of these Indians, imagining the woman as a symbol of a civilization that destroys wildlife and of exploitation of these vast primitive areas. I thought of my readings on the colonization of America (Charles C. Mann 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus and 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created ) And how the Indians lived in those days. And then the image called a deepening of the composition. I felt that the Indians were anecdotal and did not represent an interesting counterpoint to the white figure. I worked the landscape, thinking of Rousseau, whose exotic paintings I love so much since my childhood and Eric Winarto who drops trees and twirls them in the air in many of his paintings. I like the result of this collage: it is between panoramic wallpapers and illustrations of the nineteenth century, so a little naive and very nostalgic.

My inspiration

When I was asked how inspiration comes to me, I replied that I had no problem, that it was always there . The person's response was disbelief, then she said: Anyway, it is only small works.
I did not answer anything, but I've often thought about this exchange of words.
As I've written here, collage saved me from a crisis of inspiration when I left the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Thereafter, I experienced drought of inspiration, feeling like dead when it lasted too long. In recent years (since I'm retired) I compell myself to create very regularly and I find that the ideas always come, even though at first I had none.
What is my method:
I work almost every day.
I work quickly, without interruption, until the completion of the collage.
I have no prior idea what I'll do.
I chose a magazine page as a starting point and modify it.
I change the collage until it looks done to me, even if I have to totally redesign it.

for a bigger picture, click here

As an example, take my last collage "Hammock". Initially, I was attracted by the double page showing a dead cat held fully extended by some men. My first idea was to stick on it a girl's head to humanize the beast and highlight the suffering of animals. But it seemed almost trivial, because the merger between the human animal is not perfect. I then tried to fill the left foreground with a figure viewed from the front - it made the cat too secondary and so on, until the current status.

At no time have I doubted my ability to complete the collage to the end, I just "played" with the image to get a deep resonance with me, to make emerge buried and / or unknown images that surprise me and question me.

Unlike my debut as an artist, I do not put any more at stake career, fame, any recognition. I do, that's all. What matters is this inner adventure and these strange images are only a reflection of it. In fact, I play with myself, it is as if I lifted the lid of a chest to get some wonderful object.

Obviously, this may seem very narcissistic, but is not that the definition of the artist?

Mon inspiration

School memories

My first memories of school are unpleasant. I was bored and preferred to escape into daydreams. My school mistress tried to surprise me by testing me suddenly, but I listened with floating attention, and I knew the answer. This displeased her quite a lot.
I remember a huge lack of freedom, judgments about me (in my annual reports) that were completely off the plate, sanctimonious as hell. In fact anthroposophists behaved like sectarians, in total conflict with their lofty principles of respect for persons blabla. And it has not improved in adolescence, of course. But I kept a respectable average. Besides, my parents did not care what was going on in school, they weren't interested at all in my homework, if I did or not, so I benefited from a total confidence. In my annual reports, I was described as weak and lazy brief a portrait of the perfect dunce. It's just that they granted me some understanding! And when I returned a well-turned composition, thenote was belittled because I was not working enough. Thus, for ex., being the best in French, my adopted and loved language since my teens, my work was very good, but my final score was only average! At my final exam I threw everything away, swearing never to go to a school of this type again. And it's really a joke of fate that I have been oriented to teaching where I adopted the principles of respect for the student, without hypocrisy and injustice some psy work on myself helping me to see my own role in the relationship.
It did not work 100%, but this was my horizon.
Those who knew me as a little boy say that I've always been a rebel, I assume that because I do not want to be submitted and dehumanized, squeezed like a lemon by ambitious parents and noted on scales developed by shrinks who look like the reincarnation of some Nazis or Stalinists "specialists".

What I see

This collage is personal. I connect it to my grandmother and my mother, both exposed to the vengeance of the crowd. My grandmother was lynched in Riga, Latvia, where she had been deported by the Nazis. She was over 70 years, my current age. When I heard how she died, I collapsed. I can’t imagine any compassion in this mob, unlike my collage that is more nuanced than the reality of what happened in Riga. My mother was protected by my father; she did not suffer physical attacks. But it has been the hostile climate of the time. That is the background of this image. What still puzzles me is the look of this figure. It bothers me and asks me. Who am I, what is my inheritance of this dark story? Should I respond? How? Am I among the attackers? This look nails me in the stillness of the moment. It is the fixed point of this picture and yet I feel that the eyes move, they force me to make the point. I understand at least one thing that this collage touches me deeply and stirs the depths of myself.
(The title of the collage, refers, of course, to all victims of violence.)
