This night, I told myself that my inspiration was a little shallow and that I could well take a break for a day, probably because of my yesterday’s collage that might seem a little inconsistent. And then this morning, falling on a photo showing people preparing President Mitterrand for a TV show, I felt that there was a great expressive and narrative potential. I first "disfigured" Mr. M. to make a more general character. I kept the leaning person (left), but changing its face, thus bringing the image of servile courtier as in the portrait of Paul III by Titian. The figure on the right has been extensively modified and expanded, featuring him, giving him the role of chief manipulator. One is dressed in dark and the other one light and the character in the middle in gray - I love this triad. I also like the game of faces and hands, especially the ruptures and the shallow space, which reinforces the presence of the characters as in the Beaune altarpiece that I love so much. As for the message, it seems obvious to me and reminds me of the novels of Philip K. Dick and the political figures who are actually dummies. But another idea arises at the moment: I think what one would have wanted me to be and how I refused the role that was meant for me. Of course, playing it, means to be served by others, supported, cocooned, but one becomes a sham, and loses one’s substance. It can be seen in the character of the president: his face is inconsistent in its architecture and in its expression half nice half fierce, he needs to compose a mask in order to appear on the screen. In another recent collage, I wondered about the beauty of a dictator, because for me, it cannot be, it is only their powers of persuasion and illusion that make them seem like they wish to be seen.

Cette nuit, je me suis dit que mon inspiration était un peu en berne et que je pouvais bien faire une pause d’un jour, sans doute à cause de mon collage d’hier qui pourrait sembler un peu incohérent. Et voilà que ce matin, en tombant sur une photo montrant des gens de télévision préparant le président Mitterrand pour une émission, j’ai senti qu’il y avait là un grand potentiel expressif et narratif. J’ai tout d’abord « défiguré » M. pour rendre le personnage plus général. J’ai conservé le personnage penché à gauche, mais en changeant son visage, le rapprochant ainsi le l’image du courtisant servile dans le portrait de Paul III du Titien. Le personnage à droite a été largement modifié et amplifié, le mettant en vedette, lui donnant le rôle de manipulateur en chef. L’un est habillé en sombre, l’autre en clair et au milieu le personnage en gris – j’aime ce triple accord. J’aime également le jeu des visages et des mains, les décrochages et surtout l’impression de peu de profondeur, ce qui renforce la présence des personnages comme dans le retable de Beaune que j’aime tant. Quant au message, il me semble évident et me rappelle les romans de Philip K. Dick et ses personnages politiques qui sont en fait des simulacres. Mais une autre idée surgit à l’instant : je pense à ce que l’on aurait voulu que je devienne et à quel point j’ai refusé le rôle qu’on m’avait destiné. Bien sûr, en le jouant, on est bien servi par autrui, soutenu, cocolé, mais on devient alors un simulacre, on y perd sa substance. On le voit dans le personnage du président : son visage est incohérent dans son architecture et dans son expression mi gentille mi féroce, il a besoin de se composer un masque pour pouvoir apparaître à l’écran. Dans un autre collage récent, je me suis interrogé sur la possible beauté d’un dictateur, car pour moi, il ne peut y en avoir, ce n’est que leur pouvoir de persuasion et d’illusion qui le font paraître tels qu’ils voudraient être vus.
