What's New in May?

I tried to upgrade an old painting by gluing a piece of a face on it, but I have not experienced the expected sensations . I remain, for now, in my realm of magazine collage. What I see is that I oscillate between the beautiful and the monstrous. I know that my monster faces may seem repulsive and that they demand an effort of reading. I also know that in principle it is not the best way to raise the "like" on Facebook, for example. But it is the image that controls, not the desire to seduce. And the image is demanding, it has its own laws, it does not support the compromise - at least in my eyes. It wants to renew, wash my eyes, surprise me. How not to succumb to this game? I've never understood how anyone could be locked into a stereotyped style, in a tireless repetition of what has been done so many times? I prefer to discover new connections, new combinations. I realize that for me it is not so much the subject, or rather the story, that counts, but primarily the arrangement of pieces in a radically new and original way.
A discovery for me is macrophotography. With my camera, I approach flowers and explore colorful spaces that remind me of abstract paintings I wanted to do with my lacquer works. For now, I have limited myself to two half-wilted tulips in my garden and some iris, I saw at my neighbor’s and in a park in Geneva. It reminds me of the shock when I saw the Cousteau film, The Silent World. I felt like diving into a new universe.
That’s what I am after every day.

Quoi de neuf au mois de mai?
J’ai essayé de transformer une ancienne peinture en y collant un bout de visage, mais je n’ai pas éprouvé les sensations espérées. Je reste, pour le moment, dans mon royaume du collage magazine. Ce que je constate, c’est que j’oscille entre le beau et le monstrueux. Je sais bien que mes visages de monstres peuvent paraître repoussants et qu’ils demandent un effort de lecture. Je sais également qu’en principe, ce n’est pas la meilleure manière de récolter des « j’aime » sur Facebook, par ex. Mais c’est l’image qui commande, pas le désir de séduire. Et l’image est exigeante, elle a ses propres lois, elle ne supporte pas la compromission – en tout cas à mes yeux à moi. Elle veut se renouveler, laver mes yeux, me surprendre. Comment ne pas succomber à ce jeu ? Je n’ai jamais compris comment on pouvait s’enfermer dans un style stéréotypé, dans une répétition inlassable de ce qu’on a déjà fait tant de fois ? Je préfère découvrir de nouveaux assemblages, de nouvelles combinaisons. Je me rends bien compte que chez moi ce n’est pas tant le sujet, ou plutôt l’anecdote, qui compte, mais avant tout l’arrangement des morceaux dans tout radicalement nouveau et inédit.
Une découverte pour moi est la macrophotographie. Avec mon appareil photo, je m’approche de fleurs et explore des espaces colorés qui me font penser à de la peinture abstraite, à ce que je voulais faire avec mes laques. Pour l’instant, je me suis borné à deux tulipes à moitié fanées de mon jardin bourguignon et à quelques iris, vus chez mon voisin et dans un parc à Genève. Cela me rappelle le choc quand j’ai vu le film de Cousteau, Le Monde du Silence. J’ai eu l’impression de plonger dans un univers nouveau.
C’est cela que je recherche chaque jour.
